Where Have All the Orishas Gone?

Is a choreographic excavation into the diminishing presence of the Orishas—venerated spiritual entities whose remembrance has been disrupted by colonial erasure and religious syncretism. Centering the figure of Yemoja, the revered mother of oceans and a symbol of creation and protection, this work engages movement as a method of reclamation, summoning reverence through embodied inquiry.

This research engages the living archives of diasporic spirituality, investigating how Orisha entities—particularly Yemoja—persist within and beyond the cultural ruptures of forced assimilation and evolving religious practices. Through dance, the project seeks to trace the subtle, often obscured ways in which these spiritual figures continue to inhabit contemporary bodies and spaces.
